Identity Governance in 2026: Why Managing Access Is Just as Important as Granting It.

For many organizations, Identity and Access Management begins with a familiar question: “How quickly can we give this employee access?”

A mature IAM program asks several additional questions: Should this person have the access? How much access do they need? Who approved it? Is the access still appropriate? And when should it be removed?

As organizations expand across cloud platforms, SaaS applications, contractors, service accounts, APIs, and hybrid environments, simply provisioning accounts is no longer enough. In 2026, identity governance is becoming one of the most important foundations of cybersecurity and compliance.

The Risk Is Not Just Unauthorized Access

Some of the most significant identity risks come from access that was originally legitimate.

Consider an employee who moves from Accounts Payable to another department. Their new access is provisioned, but their previous financial permissions remain active. Six months later, the employee may have accumulated access across both roles.

This is commonly called access accumulation or privilege creep.

Now multiply that situation across hundreds or thousands of employees, contractors, applications, shared accounts, service identities, and administrators.

The organization may technically know who its users are while having much less confidence about what they can actually do.

IAM is no longer simply account administration.

It intersects with cybersecurity architecture, privacy, authentication, cloud security, regulatory compliance, audit, fraud prevention, and business operations.

The future IAM professional needs more than provisioning skills.

Understanding RBAC, least privilege, segregation of duties, privileged access, authentication, identity governance, Zero Trust, UARs, audit evidence, and regulatory expectations creates a much stronger professional foundation.

The most valuable IAM professionals understand both sides of access:

How to enable the business and how to protect it.
